Portuguese Firefighters and Locals Battle Wildfire in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park

Massive Wildfire in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park
A wildfire that recently broke out in the Sintra-Cascais natural park near the popular holiday destination of Cascais, Portugal, has led to a massive firefighting effort. The fire, which began in a mountainous region of the park, has spread over approximately 145 square kilometers of land west of Lisbon. As soon as the fire started, over 600 firefighters were mobilized, supported by 189 vehicles.
Water-bombing planes were also deployed to fight the fire, but their operation had to cease as night fell. The wildfire has affected several villages, with residents stepping up to protect their homes using buckets of water and hosepipes.
Strong Winds Complicate Firefighting Efforts
The strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 60 kph, have been a significant challenge in containing the fire. This has led to the evacuation of numerous residents as a safety measure. The fear of the fire reaching homes is prevalent among residents. Ines Figueiredo, a 34-year-old resident, expressed her concern as smoke filled the air, “The fear now is that it will get to the houses,” she said. Despite the efforts of residents and firefighters, no significant damage to houses or major injuries have been reported so far.
Portugal’s History with Wildfires
Even though Portugal has managed to avoid the recent heatwave causing fatalities and destruction in southern Europe, it is typically one of the European Union’s most affected countries by wildfires. Unprecedented weather conditions in July have led to chaos worldwide, with record temperatures in China, the United States, and southern Europe causing forest fires, water shortages, and a surge in heat-related hospital admissions.
Residents and Firefighters Work Together
Residents have not stood by idly during this crisis. They’ve joined the fight alongside the firefighters, using buckets of water and hosepipes to protect their homes. Wheelchairs have also been used to help evacuate those with mobility problems. “They (firefighters) do what they can,” said Miguel Medeiros, a local resident who has helped fight the flames. “It’s difficult for everyone.”
Looking Ahead
Mayor of Cascais Carlos Carreiras has stated that the gusts of up to 60 kph are the biggest challenge ahead, and that a number of people had been evacuated as a precaution. As the firefighting efforts continue, it is clear that the courage and determination of the local community, coupled with the relentless work of the firefighters, are key to tackling this wildfire. With weather conditions becoming more unpredictable and extreme, the need for effective preventive measures and efficient response strategies is more important than ever.
