Malta’s Ministry for Home Affairs and Local Muslim Community Unite to Send Humanitarian Aid to Storm-Hit Derna, Libya

Joint Effort for Humanitarian Aid
The Ministry for Home Affairs in Malta is joining hands with the local Muslim community to provide much-needed humanitarian aid to the storm-stricken Libyan city of Derna. This collaboration has led to a significant collection of donations in a brief period, including clothes, food items, and other essentials. These collected items will soon be shipped to Derna to support those affected by the devastating storm.
From Meeting to Mobilization
The aid initiative was sparked by a meeting between a Member of Parliament, Byron Camilleri, and the Imam of the Muslim community, Mohammed Elsadi. In response to Elsadi’s plea for continued aid to Libya, Camilleri immediately agreed to provide the necessary supplies to Derna. The Maltese government’s commitment to aid Libya is also reflected in the ongoing search and rescue missions in Derna, led by the Civil Protection Department and the Armed Forces of Malta.
Call for Global Support
Prime Minister Robert Abela recently appealed to the United Nations General Assembly, urging larger states to contribute additional aid for Libya. He underscored that international support is crucial for Libya’s recovery from the catastrophic storm. Meanwhile, Imam Mohammed Elsadi expressed the local Muslim community’s gratitude for past aid from Libya and emphasized the importance of reciprocating that assistance. The collected donations are currently being stored at the Ħal Far Open Center and will be accepted until Monday, October 2nd.
Storm Daniel: A Catastrophe in Derna
Storm Daniel caused severe flooding in Derna, leading to the collapse of two dams. The disaster has resulted in the death of at least 5,100 people, with thousands more reported missing. The storm has left tens of thousands homeless and caused immense damage to the city. The joint efforts of the Maltese government and the Muslim community aim to alleviate some of the suffering caused by this natural disaster.
Conclusion
The collective initiative by the Maltese government and the Muslim community exemplifies the power of cooperation in times of crisis. As the people of Derna grapple with the aftermath of Storm Daniel, this aid will provide some relief. However, the scale of the disaster underscores the need for continued international support. The global community must rally together to help Derna, and indeed all of Libya, navigate the path to recovery.
