Yemen Seeks World Ear at UN Assembly: Addressing Food Security and Renewing Ceasefire

Amid the unsettled waves of Yemen’s political waters, Presidential Leadership Council President, Rashad al-Alimi, takes his country’s plea for peace on an international canvass. He uses the platform of the United Nations General Assembly in New York to make Yemen’s dire plight known, urging global entities to ramp up pressure on Houthi insurgents for a long-lasting, all-encompassing peace.

Al-Alimi’s schedule included high-level consultations with prominent officials including the Secretary-General of the Arab League, and the UAE Foreign Minister. The discussions circled around the Yemeni crisis, with Al-Alimi detailing the situation and underlining the urgency to renew the ceasefire.

With the Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Al-Alimi deliberated over the mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia and Oman, expressing the need to initiate a comprehensive political process under the United Nations’ guidance. Vice President Aidarous al-Zubaidi was also a part of this very crucial dialogue.

Meanwhile, discussions with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Foreign Affairs Minister, illuminated the prospects of achieving fair and comprehensive peace based on mutually agreed inter-regional and international frameworks.

In his meeting with Achim Steiner, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Al-Alimi examined various UN development interventions and aligned efforts with the international community to secure more funding for sustainable and effective programs in Yemen.

Al-Alimi expressed appreciation for the UN’s shift from relief-based efforts to sustained development. He highlighted the importance of halting support directed at the Houthis in the area of mine clearance, showcasing an awareness of prioritizing long-term stability over short-term solutions.

Understanding the Crux: Food Security Crisis

Yemen’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed bin Mubarak, spotlights the conflict-induced food security crisis as Yemen’s most pressing worry. He recognizes the almost decade-long warfare by the Houthi insurgents as the main contributor to this crisis.

Mubarak emphasizes the importance of grasping the root causes of this crisis and the subsequent deterioration of essential services. This understanding, Mubarak insists, is the first step towards finding a resolute solution to the country’s predicament.

Yemen’s cry for peace from the UN platform shows the dire state of the nation. As the world turns its attention towards this crisis, the hope is for concerted global effort and understanding. As is often said in times of strife, peace isn’t a state, but a journey. Yemen hopes its international allies will join it on this long and arduous path to lasting peace.
