Ukrainian Involvement Suspected in Attacks on Russian-Backed Forces in Sudan

Recent attacks on the Wagner-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) near Sudan’s capital are believed to have been orchestrated by Ukrainian special services, according to a report by CNN. This suggests that the repercussions of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have extended beyond immediate battlefronts. The attacks raise questions about the global reach of conflicts and the involvement of external forces in far-flung regions. While Ukrainian involvement is yet to be independently confirmed, evidence, including drone-style attacks and Ukrainian text on the controllers, points to their potential role.
Sudan’s Battleground and Wagner’s Involvement
The RSF, a paramilitary group in Sudan, is engaged in a struggle for control of the country against the Sudanese army. Wagner, a Russian mercenary group, is believed to be providing assistance to the RSF in this battle. Wagner first made its presence known in Sudan in 2017, following an official visit by then-Sudanese President Omar Bashir to Moscow, where he sought military assistance from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian Involvement and Evidence
CNN reported that the attacks involved a series of strikes on RSF forces, exhibiting a unique pattern where drones swooped directly into their targets. The style of attack, notably uncommon in Sudan and the wider African region, raised suspicion. Video footage obtained by CNN pointed to the involvement of Ukrainian-style drone attacks in various Sudanese cities. Specifically, two commercially available drones, known as First-person view (FPV) and DJI MAVIC 3, were identified in the attacks.
