In a joint effort with international partners, Somali security forces conducted a successful airstrike attack in the Lower Shabelle region on Friday, resulting in the elimination of approximately 30 al-Shabaab militants. The operation was a response to Al-Shabaab’s recent assault on a military base manned by African Union forces from Uganda in the town of Bulo Marer.
The government media reported that the targeted operations focused on four villages within the Kunturwarey district, resulting in the destruction of military vehicles and heavy weaponry. The government’s media emphasized that the airstrike was a direct response to the assault carried out by Al-Shabaab militants on the African Union base.
The attack targeted soldiers from the African Union ATMIS operation, particularly Ugandan forces stationed at the base. Al-Shabaab claimed that the attack resulted in the deaths of more than 137 soldiers, although no official casualty figures have been provided by ATMIS or the Somali government.

ATMIS and the Fight Against Al-Shabaab
The African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has played a vital role in supporting Somalia’s federal government in its ongoing battle against the al-Qaeda-linked armed group. Comprising 22,000 troops, ATMIS took over from the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in 2022.
Since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s election victory, a focused government offensive was launched, resulting in significant territorial gains and diminishing the control of Al-Shabaab over vast regions. The latest airstrike operation further reinforces the determination of Somali security forces and their international partners to continue their efforts in combating terrorism and restoring peace and stability to the country.

The joint efforts of Somali security forces, international partners, and the support provided by ATMIS serve as critical components in achieving these objectives and ensuring a safer future for Somalia.
