Oleksiy Danilov, a senior Ukrainian security official, has stated that Ukraine is ready to launch its long-anticipated counter-offensive against Russian forces. Although he did not provide a specific date, he emphasized that the assault to reclaim territory from President Vladimir Putin’s occupying forces could commence in the near future. Danilov cautioned that the Ukrainian government must not make any mistakes in this crucial decision, as it presents a historic opportunity that cannot be missed.
As the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov is a key member of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s de facto war cabinet. He confirmed that some Wagner mercenary forces were withdrawing from the city of Bakhmut, where a significant battle took place, but highlighted that they were regrouping in three other locations and would continue fighting. Ukraine has been meticulously planning its counter-offensive, utilizing the time to train troops and acquire military equipment from Western allies.

The stakes are high for Ukraine, as it aims to demonstrate to its citizens and Western allies that it can break through Russian lines, end the military deadlock, and reclaim its sovereign territory. Russian forces have been fortifying their defenses in preparation for a potential offensive. Danilov expressed confidence in Ukraine’s armed forces, stating that they are always ready to defend the country and emphasizing the responsibility of not squandering the historic opportunity presented to become an independent and influential European nation.
Addressing the ongoing conflict, Danilov dismissed claims that the counter-offensive had already begun, stating that Ukrainian forces have been tasked with targeting Russian control centers and military equipment since Russia’s invasion on February 24th last year. He defended Ukraine’s decision to fight for months in Bakhmut, emphasizing the importance of defending their land and territory. While acknowledging that Ukrainian forces only control a small part of the city, Danilov underscored Bakhmut’s significant role in the war.
