After three rounds of negotiations with the state’s energy minister, AK Sharma, the workers in Uttar Pradesh electricity department have ended their 65-hour strike. Convenor of the Sangharsh Samiti Shailendra Dubey declared the employees’ return to work, stating that the walkout has been called off in observance of the chief minister’s order, the energy minister’s assurance, and the Allahabad High Court.
The strike, which began on Thursday, left several parts of the state without electricity, including hospitals and medical facilities, causing inconvenience to citizens. The workers were protesting against the government’s decision to privatize power distribution and demanded job security and a fair wage.
The strike had led to the suspension of around 3,000 workers, with charges filed against 22 individuals under the Essential Services Maintenance Act, and cases registered against 29 others.
The energy minister has promised that the requests of the protesting employees will be met, but no written guarantees have been given to them. However, it has been announced that the 3,000 workers who were fired will receive their jobs back, including the 22 charged under the Essential Services Maintenance Act and the 29 against whom cases were registered.
The end of the strike is a relief to the citizens of Uttar Pradesh who had been facing difficulties due to the power outage, and it remains to be seen if the government will fulfill its promises to the workers.
