Türkiye's state-owned energy company, Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), announced on Tuesday that the country's daily oil production has reached its highest level in 32 years. This remarkable achievement has been made possible by recent discoveries, spearheaded by a massive find in the southern region of the country just last month. The daily output has now surpassed 70,000 barrels, marking a significant milestone for the nation's energy sector.

In early May, Türkiye revealed that it had discovered a staggering 1 billion barrels of oil in the southeastern province of Şırnak. This onshore oil find is the largest in the country's history and has been a driving force behind the recent surge in daily oil production. TPAO, which has been leading the exploration efforts, has drilled 2,771 meters deep and identified an oil-bearing reservoir spanning over 162 meters. With further prospects yet to be explored, the potential for even greater discoveries in the area is promising.

Martyr Aybüke Yalçın-1 Well Production and Future Plans

One of the key wells contributing to Türkiye's increased oil production is the Martyr Aybüke Yalçın-1, located approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Cizre town. Currently, this well alone produces around 10,000 barrels of oil daily.

TPAO has ambitious plans for the future, intending to drill back-to-back appraisal wells and develop a comprehensive field development plan by the end of the year. The ultimate goal is to achieve a production rate of 100,000 barrels per day, effectively more than doubling Türkiye's current oil production.

Türkiye's Other Significant Oil Discoveries

The recent Şırnak oil discovery is not the only significant find Türkiye has made in recent times. In December 2022, the country discovered an additional 150 million barrels of oil in the Mount Gabar area in the southeast. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hailed this find as one of the top ten onshore discoveries of 2022, estimating its value at around $12 billion. These discoveries are crucial for Türkiye, which relies heavily on oil and gas imports to meet its energy needs.

Reducing Türkiye's Energy Dependency

Türkiye's limited domestic oil and gas reserves have led to a heavy reliance on imports from countries like Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.

However, the recent oil discoveries, along with ongoing efforts to develop domestic energy resources, are aimed at reducing Türkiye's energy dependency. Ankara has already begun the development of a natural gas field in the Black Sea, which was gradually discovered starting in August 2020. In April, the country commenced the pumping of natural gas into the national grid, marking a significant step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency.

The surge in oil production is expected to have a positive impact on Türkiye's economy. With a significant reduction in energy imports, the country can allocate resources towards other sectors, fostering economic growth and stability. Additionally, the newfound energy independence provides Türkiye with a strategic advantage, ensuring a more secure energy supply and mitigating potential geopolitical risks associated with energy dependence.
