Tragedy Strikes: Three Women’s Protection Units Fighters Fall in Turkish Drone Strike

Luxembourg Ministry Expresses Regret
The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg has expressed regret over the demise of three fighters from the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) in a Turkish drone strike in Manbij, northern Syria. This information was relayed through an official online platform. Among the victims was Shervin Sardar, a notable YPJ leader who had engaged in various battles against the Islamic State (ISIS). Remarkably, Sardar had met with the Luxembourg Foreign Minister, Jean Asselborn, in 2016, highlighting her international reach and the importance of her role.
Understanding the YPJ and its Role in the Region
Established in April 2013, the YPJ is an all-female force predominantly composed of Kurdish women, but also includes other ethnic groups from Northeastern Syria. This force forms part of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The YPJ and SDF have been instrumental in the fight against ISIS, contributing significantly to regional stability and security.
The Turkish drone strike resulting in the deaths of the three YPJ fighters occurred on September 15th, a date coinciding with the anniversary of the ISIS attack on Kobani, a city in northern Syria, in 2014. This attack marked the first defeat of ISIS, a significant milestone in the struggle against terrorism in the region.
Global Implications and Ongoing Conflict
The Ministry’s statement underscores the importance of the YPJ and SDF in the fight against ISIS and draws attention to the ongoing conflict in the region. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the continued hazards faced by these groups and the wider implications of international involvement in the region. The regret expressed by the Luxembourg Ministry highlights the global concern about the continued violence in Syria and the role of different actors in the conflict.
While the death of the three YPJ fighters is a tragic loss, it also serves to highlight the bravery and dedication of these women. Their commitment to fighting ISIS and maintaining stability in their region is a testament to their courage and resilience. The global community continues to monitor the situation in Syria with concern, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
