Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Extends Aid to Flood-Affected Libya

Amidst Access Challenges, SDC Realigns Efforts to Aid Libya
In a remarkable display of solidarity and humanitarian commitment, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is reconfiguring its initiatives in the face of challenging access and security restrictions in Libya. While the situation on the ground remains complex, the SDC is determined to provide vital assistance to the Libyan population affected by the recent catastrophic flooding.
A Beacon of Hope for Libya
As part of its newly adapted strategy, the SDC is allocating over CHF1 million Swiss francs in additional aid. This substantial contribution will bolster efforts to alleviate the suffering of those grappling with the aftermath of the devastating floods.
UN Collaboration for Maximum Impact
In an extraordinary gesture of support, the SDC has extended an offer to the United Nations (UN). This offer encompasses the dispatch of essential materials and expert personnel from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Corps. Such collaboration underscores the commitment of international organizations to rally together in times of crisis.
A Plea Answered
The genesis of this noble endeavor lies in a heartfelt plea from National Councillor Denis de la Reussille. His appeal for assistance resonated deeply with the SDC, propelling them into action despite the inherent challenges.
A Helping Hand from Afar
Notably, the SDC does not maintain a physical presence within Libya. Instead, it conducts its humanitarian operations from the neighboring nation of Tunisia. This geographical proximity allows them to act swiftly and efficiently in times of crisis.
Acknowledging Urgent Needs
As a testament to their unwavering commitment, the SDC had previously indicated its intention to provide financial support to local or multilateral partners. This support is specifically geared towards addressing the pressing needs of flood victims, offering them hope and relief in dire circumstances.
Storm Daniel’s Wrath
The devastating events in Libya unfolded during the night of September 10th to 11th when Storm Daniel swept through the region, targeting eastern Libya with particular ferocity. Derna, a coastal city with a population of approximately 100,000, bore the brunt of the storm’s fury. The catastrophic consequences included the breach of two upstream dams, triggering widespread flooding and devastation.
A Tragic Toll
The latest preliminary official statistics paint a grim picture: the floods have exacted a heartbreaking toll, claiming the lives of at least 3,868 individuals. Thousands of others remain unaccounted for, compounding the tragedy.
