South Sudan: President Kiir Dismisses Finance Minister in Unforeseen Move

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir takes swift action by removing the Finance Minister Dier Tong Ngor from office in a sudden cabinet reshuffle, and a spokesperson for Kiir linked it to a recent slump in the South Sudanese pound.
“You have seen what’s happening in the market, I mean how the U.S. dollar is appreciating against the South Sudanese pound,” the spokesperson said, when asked why Ngor had been removed after about a year in his post.
The reason for Ngor’s dismissal was not stated in the first notification.
The next finance minister would be Bak Barnaba Chol, an economics graduate and close political supporter of Kiir, according to the spokesperson, who added that cabinet changes were normal for Kiir when he believed it was necessary.
South Sudan’s currency has plummeted by almost one-third versus the dollar in the last two months, with economists citing economic instability caused by community conflict and Kiir’s refusal to strictly comply to a 2018 peace deal as concerns.
