The UAE is setting new standards for sustainable architecture with its iconic structures. The government approved the Green Building and Sustainable Building standards in 2010, aiming to save Dh10 billion by 2030 and reduce carbon emissions by 30%. Private companies like Aldar are also investing in energy-efficient upgrades to their properties.

Sea Heroes: Safeguarding Coastal Ecosystems

With its extensive coastline of approximately 1,318km, the UAE recognizes the importance of protecting its marine ecosystems. The Jaywun marine research vessel monitors the marine environment, assessing the impacts of climate change. Additionally, the country has established 16 marine protected areas to preserve its coastal biodiversity.

Climate Makers: Empowering Sustainability Champions

The UAE celebrates individuals and organizations leading the way in climate action. Appointing Dr. Sultan Al Jaber as the president-designate of COP28 and Shamma Al Mazrui as the Youth Climate Champion demonstrates their commitment. The UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, Razan Al Mubarak, works tirelessly to advocate for sustainable practices. The Dubai Press Club and Goumbook launched a podcast featuring sustainability and climate action leaders.

The UAE's sustainable initiatives extend beyond the six highlighted above. Homegrown businesses like Switch Foods contribute to the country's sustainable future with state-of-the-art plant-based meat production facilities. Masdar City Free Zone attracts sustainability-focused innovation and technology companies, fostering a thriving ecosystem.

To promote ecotourism, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment launched 'The UAE's Natural Wonders' project. By raising awareness about the country's 43 nature reserves, the project encourages sustainable tourism practices across all seven emirates. The ministry has compiled a comprehensive collection of information materials, photographs, and videos to support the initiative.

Through collaborative efforts, the UAE protects its delicate ecosystems. The country boasts 49 nature reserves, with ten designated as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Additionally, the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network encompasses 13 terrestrial reserves and six marine protected areas.
