Taliban President of Takhar University Draws Criticism for Road Construction Funding Plan
Mohammad Bashir Mujahid, the newly appointed Taliban head of Takhar University, plans to fund the construction of a seven-kilometer road inside the university through salary deductions from professors and the cost of food for students. This strategy has drawn backlash from professors and students alike.
Salary Deductions and Food Costs Funding
Mujahid reportedly takes around 1,000 to 1,500 Afghanis from each professor, with those studying abroad paying 1,500 Afghanis, according to an anonymous source. The cost of one month's food for students will also be collected to fund the road construction. The source revealed that the school has already collected 700,000 Afghanis from salaries and food consumption.
Dissenting Voices
Professors and students have expressed reservations about the decision, with the seven-million-Afghani project being too expensive for them to afford. Furthermore, they feel that the basic quality of the road construction does not justify the expenses incurred in the process.
Taliban President's Rationale
Mujahid justifies the plan by stating that the funds are being collected to rebuild the university's ring road, an initiative that was left unfinished by the previous government. According to him, the Taliban government does not have allocated funds for the project, emphasizing that "students and professors themselves got to work."
