The Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) has taken a crucial step in ensuring the rights and well-being of migrant workers by establishing a dedicated help desk and immigration services at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). This significant initiative reflects the government's unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive assistance to migrant workers throughout their journey, from the moment they depart until their safe return.

The Chief Secretary of BP2MI, Rinardi, expressed the government's dedication to serving and protecting migrant workers in all stages of their employment abroad. Rinardi emphasized, "The government is here to serve and protect, from (the time of their) departure to return. When they are at their destination, they are still the state's responsibility." This proclamation underlines the government's recognition of the vital role played by Indonesian citizens working overseas and their commitment to ensuring their well-being.

Yogyakarta International Airport becomes the seventh airport where BP2MI has established such services, showcasing the agency's proactive approach to extending its reach and ensuring that all migrant workers receive the necessary assistance. This strategic placement of help desks and immigration services allows for immediate intervention and guidance for workers departing or arriving at YIA, providing a valuable support system for their journey.

Rinardi shared alarming statistics, highlighting the government's determination to protect its people. From January 2020 to May 2023, over 95,000 migrant workers encountered numerous challenges during their return journey due to unauthorized means of overseas travel. These troubling figures underscore the urgency of providing proper channels and services for migrant workers, as unauthorized methods often lead to exploitation, abuse, and legal complications.

The establishment of the help desk and immigration services at Yogyakarta International Airport represents a significant milestone in the efforts to ensure the well-being of Indonesian migrant workers. By offering support from the beginning of their journey until their safe return, the government aims to minimize risks and enhance the protection of its citizens abroad. These dedicated services provide essential assistance such as guidance on legal requirements, ensuring proper documentation, and addressing any concerns or issues that arise during their travel. Migrant workers can now approach the help desk to seek information, support, and clarification on various aspects, including employment contracts, destination countries' laws and regulations, and their rights as workers. Furthermore, immigration services assist in streamlining the departure and arrival processes, ensuring smooth and lawful transitions for workers.

The government's commitment to protecting Indonesian migrant workers extends beyond the establishment of help desks and immigration services. BP2MI also focuses on preventive measures, such as raising awareness among potential migrants about legal and safe channels for employment abroad. Through comprehensive pre-departure orientations and counseling sessions, prospective workers receive guidance on choosing reputable recruitment agencies, understanding their rights and obligations, and recognizing the signs of potential exploitation or trafficking. This proactive approach empowers individuals to make informed decisions and minimizes the risks associated with unauthorized migration.
