According to local sources, the recent security cooperation agreement between Iran and Iraq has a main focus on cracking down on Iranian Kurdish opposition parties.
Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, visited Baghdad and signed the agreement with Qassim al-Araji, the Advisor of Iraq’s National Security Council.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) states that the two countries will work together to protect the stability and security of their borders. As per the agreement, Iraq has pledged not to allow armed groups to use its territory in the Kurdish region to launch any border-crossing attacks on Iran, which has been confirmed by Iranian sources.
The Kurdish opposition movements in question include Komala, Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP), and Free Life Party of Kurdistan (Pejak), which Iran has labeled as “terrorist groups.” These opposition groups are currently present in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
The security agreement between Iran and Iraq is a significant development in the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. It remains to be seen how this agreement will affect the Kurdish opposition movements and the stability of the region.
