A Rwandanese transgender woman named Imanitwitaho Zachee, popularly known as Zachee, was killed by a gunshot in Louisville, Kentucky last Friday.
This marks at least the fifth violent death of a transgender person in the US this year, according to a blog that tracks anti-trans violence.
Edilberto Reyes, a 58-year-old co-worker of Zachee, has been arrested and is being held on $100,000 bond.
Police are still investigating the motive for the shooting.
Zachee was a beloved member of her community and was remembered for her bravery and kindness.
Her death is a tragedy, and her friends and family are seeking support to cover her funeral expenses.
Another trans woman, Destiny Howard, was killed in Georgia in December, but her death is only now being counted among the violence against the transgender community.
