Regrouping and Strengthening Capabilities
Amid the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, a senior Kyiv official revealed on Saturday that Russian forces have temporarily scaled back their attacks on the besieged city of Bakhmut. This move comes as the Russian-backed Wagner private army relinquishes control to regular Russian troops, following the intense and protracted battle for the city.
According to Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar’s statement on Telegram, while Russian forces continue to engage in sporadic attacks, there has been an overall decrease in offensive activity. Maliar noted that active battles have not occurred in the city or its flanks in recent days.
Instead, Russian troops are focusing on shelling the outskirts and approaching Bakhmut. The decrease in offensive activity is attributed to the ongoing replacement and regrouping of troops, as Russia seeks to strengthen its capabilities.
Maliar further emphasized that Ukrainian forces maintain firm control over the heights overlooking Bakhmut from the north and south, as well as a portion of the outskirts. However, there has been no significant advancement in the past two days as Ukrainian troops redirect their focus toward other tasks.
In a video posted by the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukrainian special forces were shown operating within the devastated city, underscoring the determination to reclaim the occupied territory.
