An attempt by India’s Adani Group to resume construction on a $900 million transshipment port on the country’s southern tip was thwarted by protesters from a fishing community, a company representative said on Saturday.
Construction at Adani’s Vizhinjam seaport has been halted for more than three months after protesters, erected a large shelter blocking the port’s entrance, alleging that the project had caused coastal erosion and deprived them of their livelihoods.
The Adani Group attempted to move heavy vehicles into the port on Saturday following a court directive this week that construction work must resume, but protesters blocked them from entering, according to an Adani spokesperson in Kerala’s southern state.
According to the spokesperson, approximately 25 trucks attempted to enter the port but were forced to turn back after two were hit by stones thrown by protesters.
