The High Independent Authority of Audiovisual Communication (HAICA) has taken a firm stance against the restrictions imposed on Tunisian journalists and expressed unwavering support for their rights and freedoms in the face of harassment and abuse.
The regulator stated in a press release on Thursday that “abusive and arbitrary” measures have reached a pinnacle with the judicial persecution of journalists and the deterioration of their financial and social conditions.
In light of this dreadful situation, HAICA invites Najla Bouden’s government to engage in a “frank and open dialogue” with media stakeholders and to clearly establish its own vision and strategy for Tunisia’s media future.
While condemning the government’s approach to the media issue, HAICA said it was “astonished” that the government was instead seeking to marginalise it and erase its role as the main media regulator in Tunisia.
In this context, HAICA “deeply regrets that the government has tightened the noose around the authority’s activities by getting its hands on its registry and obstructing the exercise of its decision-making powers, which is undoubtedly a blatant violation of its independence and an undeniable usurpation of its prerogatives,” according to the statement.
Upholding Press Freedom and Defending Journalists’ Rights
HAICA, the High Independent Authority of Audiovisual Communication, has raised its voice in denouncing the restrictions faced by Tunisian journalists. As a regulatory body responsible for overseeing the audiovisual sector, HAICA plays a crucial role in safeguarding press freedom and ensuring the integrity and independence of the media landscape in Tunisia. By speaking out against the limitations imposed on journalists, HAICA reaffirms its commitment to defending their rights and promoting a vibrant and unbiased media environment.
The restrictions faced by Tunisian journalists can take various forms, including censorship, harassment, intimidation, and legal constraints. These limitations not only impede the journalists’ ability to carry out their work but also hinder the public’s right to access accurate and unbiased information. HAICA’s condemnation of these restrictions sends a strong message that the authority stands firmly in support of press freedom and will work diligently to address any infringements on journalists’ rights.
Promoting Transparency and Democracy through Independent Journalism
HAICA’s steadfast support for Tunisian journalists is rooted in the belief that a free and independent press is vital for the functioning of a democratic society. Independent journalism serves as a watchdog, holding those in power accountable and ensuring transparency in governance. By denouncing restrictions and advocating for the rights of journalists, HAICA aims to create an environment where journalists can operate without fear and report on matters of public interest without undue interference.
Moreover, HAICA’s solidarity with Tunisian journalists reinforces the importance of their role in fostering public debate, shaping public opinion, and providing a platform for diverse voices to be heard. In a democratic society, the media serves as a conduit for information, enabling citizens to make informed decisions and participate actively in the democratic process. HAICA’s commitment to supporting journalists strengthens the democratic fabric of Tunisia and paves the way for a more transparent and inclusive society.
