In a show of solidarity, all seven coal mines operating under the Elektroprivreda Bosnia and Herzegovina Concern conducted a one-hour warning strike at 7 am today in support of miners from the Zenica mine, according to local sources. The Zenica miners stopped production on Friday afternoon, while a group of chambers has been on a hunger strike for three days due to the mine’s inability to pay salaries and allowances for hot meals.
The situation arose after the Zenica City Administration blocked the mine’s account, resulting in the inability to pay salaries and allowances. As a result, the miners have threatened new protests tomorrow if the account is not unblocked by 3 pm today.
The umbrella mining union has invited representatives from Elektroprivreda BIH, the Zenica mine, and the City of Zenica to sign an agreement today that would define the mine’s obligations toward Zenica City to address the mine’s debt of 3 million marks.
In a further show of support, the Kreka mine workers also joined in the one-hour solidarity strike with the Zenica miners this morning. They have declared that they will not stop protesting until their demands are met. If the situation does not improve, they will return to Zenica tomorrow to continue the demonstration.
The united front of coal miners across Bosnia and Herzegovina sends a strong message of solidarity and support to the Zenica mine workers, as they fight for their rights and demand that their concerns be heard.
