Prominent Omani YouTuber Released After Abduction in Yemen’s Marib

In a recent development, prominent Omani YouTuber Harith Al-Shereiqi, known as TravelerHarith on social media, has been released after several days in captivity in the Yemeni city of Marib. Reports indicate that he was abducted by Islah militia at a checkpoint earlier this month. The city of Marib is the sole northern city under the control of forces loyal to the Saudi-backed, internationally-recognized Yemeni government.
Abduction in Marib
Harith Al-Shereiqi’s ordeal began when he was reportedly seized by Islah militia at a checkpoint in Marib. The circumstances surrounding his abduction were not immediately clear, but it raised concerns about the security situation in the region. Al-Shereiqi, in a radio appearance following his release, revealed that he was detained by the security services in Marib after his arrival there. During his detention, he was subjected to interrogation about unspecified matters. He mentioned that he could not disclose the details at the moment but intended to share them with the authorities.
Sheikh Mohsen Bin Saleh Shatif’s Involvement
Al-Shereiqi also disclosed that Sheikh Mohsen Bin Saleh Shatif, the brother of the Yemeni ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman, is currently hosting him at his home in Marib. This arrangement facilitated his eventual release and return to his homeland. The news of Al-Shereiqi’s abduction drew condemnation from various activists online who called for his immediate release. Ali Al-Nasi, an activist, emphasized that Al-Shereiqi was detained simply because of his desire to visit Sana’a, stressing that he had no involvement in any political disputes.
Concern for Colleague’s Safety
While Al-Shereiqi has been released, concerns remain for his Yemeni colleague, Hamza Al-Adaini, who is still held captive. Al-Hasani, an activist from the south, highlighted Al-Adaini’s situation, noting that he has been residing in Oman for 15 years and has a family waiting for his return. Al-Adaini is described as an unarmed civilian who has not committed any crimes or harmed anyone.
Mediation and Ransom Payment
Reports indicated that Harith Al-Shereiqi’s release came through mediation led by the ambassador in Muscat, Oman. The negotiations reportedly involved the payment of a ransom. The exact details of the mediation and ransom remain undisclosed. The release of Harith Al-Shereiqi, the Omani YouTuber, from captivity in Marib has brought relief to his supporters and activists who campaigned for his freedom. However, his abduction raises questions about the security situation in Yemen, particularly in areas controlled by various factions.
