The number of doctors and nurses volunteering to help with the health crisis in the Yanomami territory grew by 700%.
More than 19,400 professionals registered at the volunteer center. 16,000 more than the number registered until December last year (2,502).
The Federal University of Amazonas also mobilized the academic community to volunteer in the National Force. The registration for students and teachers is permanent and there is the possibility of being invited for future missions.
Volunteers already called up will provide direct care to patients located at the Yanomami Indigenous Health Center and assistance at the Brazilian Army hospital. The team is made up of doctors, nurses, and nutritionists who will act according to their specialties.
The initiative is from the Federal Government of Brazil, after declaring a Public Health Emergency of National Importance in the region.
According to the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade Trindade, since the work of the government transition team, there have been reports of abandonment and lack of assistance, which was confirmed by the work of Ministry of Health officials highlighted in a report.
The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office pointed to “state omission” as the reason for the humanitarian crisis faced by the Yanomami.
