Six people were killed and others were injured after a train collided with a bus that was attempting to cross the rail track despite a traffic signal in Lagos, Nigeria, according to the emergency response agency on Friday.
The bus was carrying government employees to work when it collided with an intra-city train in Lagos’ Ikeja neighbourhood, according to Ibrahim Farinloye, state director of Nigeria’s National Disaster Management Agency.
“So far, 84 people were rescued alive and taken to the hospital…(and) the total deaths so far is six including those who died at the hospital,” Farinloye said. According to him, all of the injured passengers were from the bus, and no one on the train was hurt.
According to locals, train and truck accidents are common in many Nigerian cities where traffic restrictions are frequently ignored.
