ICRC Reports Dire Conditions for Civilians in Besieged City of Bakhmut, Eastern Ukraine

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has expressed concern over the plight of civilians trapped in the besieged city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. According to the ICRC, approximately 10,000 civilians, including elderly and disabled individuals, are living in "very dire conditions" in and around the city.

Although more than 90% of Bakhmut's population has fled and much of the city has been destroyed, several thousand civilians are estimated to remain in the city itself. Umar Khan, the ICRC's representative in Dnipro, warned that these civilians are living in extremely difficult conditions, spending most of their days in shelters and enduring intense shelling.

The effects of the conflict are visible throughout the city, with houses crushed by military firepower, roofs ripped off, and apartment buildings pockmarked with holes. Civilians are at constant risk of exploding shells and bombs, and some are forced to live in shelters in order to survive.

The ICRC has called for greater efforts to protect civilians in Bakhmut and other conflict-affected areas of Ukraine. The organization has emphasized the need for all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians caught up in the fighting.

The situation in Bakhmut is just one example of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in eastern Ukraine, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict. The ICRC and other humanitarian organizations are working to provide assistance and protection to those affected by the violence, but much more needs to be done to address the root causes of the conflict and to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
