Global Refugee Crisis: Sandlund Highlights a Dual Approach in Lithuania

Conflicts Driving the Growing Global Refugee Crisis
According to United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) representative for the Nordic and Baltic countries, Annika Sandlund, the global refugee crisis is worsening every year due to ongoing conflicts in several nations. In particular, war and strife in Ukraine, Sudan, Venezuela, Syria, and Afghanistan are forcing millions of individuals to flee their homes. The trauma experienced by these displaced individuals is profound, necessitating additional support to help them assimilate into their new environments.
Cyclical Wars and Lack of Effective Political Solutions
The challenges associated with addressing the global refugee crisis are multifaceted. Sandlund points to the increasing duration of wars, their cyclical nature, and the lack of effective political negotiations and solutions as significant obstacles. Notably, the majority of refugees worldwide, about 86%, flee to neighboring countries, accentuating the need for international cooperation and dialogue.
The European Response to Ukrainian Refugees
Despite these challenges, Sandlund expresses optimism about Europe’s response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis. She notes that it evidences the continent’s capacity to make political decisions and open hearts and minds. However, she also observes a double standard when it comes to refugees from different regions. Refugees from Africa or Asia, she argues, are treated differently in Europe due to historical and contextual factors.
Controversial Policy of Pushing Back Migrants
One of the significant points of contention is the policy of pushing back migrants along the Lithuanian, Latvian, and Polish borders with Belarus. Sandlund criticizes this practice, arguing that it instrumentalizes individuals for political objectives. She emphasizes the importance of granting all individuals crossing the border access to the territory, after which their status can be determined.
Lithuania’s Dual Approach: A Cause for Concern
Lithuania has received praise for integrating Ukrainian refugees but has also faced criticism for turning away individuals crossing from Belarus. This dual approach has raised concerns about the country’s commitment to refugee rights. Sandlund underscores the importance of individual assessments and adherence to UNHCR guidelines when determining refugee status. She further notes that while some individuals may not require international protection and can be sent back, others face substantial risks in their home countries and should be granted some form of legal status to stay.
Call for Increased Support and Political Solutions
In conclusion, Sandlund urges for a more compassionate and understanding response to the global refugee crisis. She emphasizes the need for individual assessments and adherence to UNHCR guidelines in determining refugee status. Moreover, she highlights the urgency for political solutions to address the growing crisis. For her, the resolution of the refugee crisis is not just about providing immediate assistance but also about finding long-term solutions that address the root causes of displacement.
