Shielding Children’s Vision: MiYOSMART Lenses Offer Protection and Myopia Control

Understanding the Risks of Sunlight Exposure on Children’s Vision

While natural sunlight has been noted for its benefits on children’s vision, it also poses significant risks. Intense sunlight can accelerate the onset of myopia in children, making them more susceptible to eye damage. Myopia, a refractive error caused by an elongation of the eyeball, leads to blurred distance vision due to the point of refraction being slightly displaced from the retina. As the eye continues to grow during childhood, the refractive error also increases, causing myopia to progress until adulthood. Yet, despite being a common condition, myopia cannot be definitively treated in children due to the ongoing development of the eye.

Introducing MiYOSMART: A Solution for Myopia Control

However, there is a solution to this growing concern. HOYA, in partnership with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has developed MiYOSMART smart lenses through innovative technology known as Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.). These lenses have been found to slow the progression of myopia by approximately 60% when worn regularly. In some cases, up to 21.5% of children using these lenses experienced a complete halt in myopia progression.

The Rising Incidence of Myopia

The introduction of MiYOSMART lenses is timely considering the alarming increase in myopia incidence. Predictions indicate that by 2050, as many as 5 billion people could be affected by myopia, potentially making up half of the global population.

Protecting Children’s Vision Against Intense Sunlight

To protect children from intense sunlight while allowing them to benefit from natural light, eye care specialists recommend a minimum of two hours per day outdoors. However, during summer, this recommended exposure could lead to eye damage among children who are more vulnerable to intense sun rays than adults. To address this, HOYA has enhanced the MiYOSMART lenses with the MiYOSMART sun lens, a formula adaptable to all seasons.

The MiYOSMART Sun Lens: A Versatile Solution

The MiYOSMART sun lens is available in two versions, both equipped with D.I.M.S. technology. The MiYOSMART Chameleon are photochromic lenses that adapt to light intensity, providing complete sun protection. The MiYOSMART Sunbird, on the other hand, are polarized lenses that control myopia while offering vibrant color vision. These are especially suitable for children with photophobia.

Global Adoption and Continuous Innovation

Since their launch, over four million MiYOSMART lenses have been purchased by parents worldwide, showcasing the demand for such innovative solutions. HOYA, a global leader in vision care innovation, continues to invest in research and education, reaffirming its commitment to improving vision care. The MiYOSMART smart lenses are a testament to this ongoing effort.
