Rising Cases of Influenza

In a statement released on Saturday, the Department of Health disclosed that influenza cases have been steadily increasing since April 10, 2023. The NICD has received reports of influenza clusters in schools and workplaces, indicating a potential outbreak.

Surveillance conducted in six provinces - KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and North West - has identified an uptick in case numbers. The department and NICD are closely monitoring the situation and implementing necessary measures to control the spread of the virus.

Understanding Influenza and its Transmission

Influenza, or flu, is an acute respiratory illness caused by an infection of the respiratory tract with the influenza virus. There are two common types of influenza viruses that infect humans: Type A and Type B. In South Africa, flu viruses typically circulate before the winter season.

The influenza virus spreads from person to person through the inhalation of infected respiratory droplets expelled when individuals sneeze, cough, or talk. It can also be contracted by touching contaminated objects or surfaces and then touching the mouth, eyes, or nose. The virus is highly contagious, and people should take precautions to minimize its spread.

Preventive Measures to Protect Against Influenza

To prevent the spread of influenza and protect public health, individuals who are infected with the virus should take several precautionary measures. When coughing or sneezing, individuals should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or cough into the elbow to minimize the release of respiratory droplets into the air.

Seeking Medical Attention

If individuals experience symptoms of influenza, such as high fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, or headache, they are advised to seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.

The Department of Health emphasizes the importance of staying informed and following the guidance provided by healthcare professionals and public health authorities. By practicing good hygiene, adopting preventive measures, and seeking medical care when necessary, individuals can contribute to controlling the spread of influenza and safeguarding public health.
