In an unprecedented move, France has announced the deployment of 35,000 security agents and military personnel to ensure the safety and security of the 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony. Addressing Drone Threats and Enhancing Intelligence Sharing

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin highlighted the evolving threat posed by drones and acknowledged the challenges in combating this new form of security risk. While significant progress has been made in countering conventional threats, such as armed individuals or explosive devices, the arrival of drones carrying explosives in civilian areas presents a unique challenge. The French military, responsible for defense against drone attacks, will work in tandem with security forces to develop effective countermeasures.

Furthermore, the French government plans to bolster intelligence sharing with police forces across Europe. By enhancing collaboration and exchanging information on individuals who may pose a terrorism threat, France aims to prevent potential risks from materializing on its soil during the Olympic Games.

Border Control

The government has also requested permission from the European Commission to reinstate border controls for the Olympics and this year's Rugby World Cup. This measure would apply to individuals arriving from countries within the passport-free Schengen Area, which enables unrestricted movement. While France expects the European Commission to grant the request, a formal response is still awaited.

More than 600,000 attendees are anticipated at the Games' launch event. Amidst the excitement, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo acknowledges the need for heightened security. She recognizes that an event of this magnitude will attract individuals seeking to celebrate, while others may aim to disrupt the festivities.
