Dr. Tariq, the head of the National Project for Olive Food Sector, spoke at the 4th National Olive Fair, highlighting that Pakistan spends billions of rupees every year to improve the country’s olive industry through the Barani Research Institute. The Institute, based in Chakwal, plays a crucial role in olive cultivation and research.
The Zaitoon Mela event provides a platform for agricultural scientists, olive growers, olive product manufacturers, and investors to collaborate and create a common strategy for olive promotion. Olive growers have the opportunity to learn about modern agricultural recommendations and techniques through this event.
Dr. Costatino Parma, Director of Italian Olive Culture, also attended the event and commended the high-quality olives being produced in Pakistan. Dr. Zafar Qureshi, the Project Director of the Center of Excellence for Olive Research and Training in Chakwal, emphasized that olive cultivation not only provides employment opportunities but also helps prevent land erosion and positively impacts climate change.
He added that all stakeholders must work together to increase olive production. The Center of Excellence has already planted more than 2 million olive trees in the Pothwar region, with the institute providing olive trees at a 67% subsidy. To solve olive irrigation problems, the institute is also offering subsidies for the installation of modern drip irrigation systems.
At the event, Shiraz Ali, the director of Barani Agricultural Research Institute in Chakwal, announced that olive oil stress being given to farmers is being subsidized. The Institute has introduced new olive varieties after years of research, making it easier for farmers to grow olives in Pakistan.
