The Lithuanian State Data Agency has reported a sharp decline in the transport of goods by all types of transport in the last quarter of 2022.
The total transport of goods amounted to 31.2 million tons, a decrease of 24% year-on-year.
The volume of goods transported by sea decreased by 36.4%, by inland waterways by 12.2%, and no goods were transported by Lithuanian airlines.
Furthermore, the volume of goods transported by rail decreased by 46.1%, and by road by 10.6%.
In comparison to the same period in 2021, tonne-kilometres by all types of transport decreased by 19.9% from October to December 2022.
The report highlights that tonne-kilometres of road transport accounted for 87.4% of the total transport of goods, while rail transport accounted for 12.5%.
The decline in transport volume is likely to have been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused significant disruptions in the global supply chain.
The report also raises concerns about the impact of the declining transport volume on the Lithuanian economy, as the transport sector is a significant contributor to the country’s GDP.
The Lithuanian government may need to consider measures to support the transport sector and mitigate the economic impact of the decline in transport volume.
