Deaf-Mute Malaysian Climber Makes History Scaling Mt Everest

Muhammad Hawari Bin Hashim, 33, is a deaf and mute mountaineer from Malaysia who made history by reaching the summit of Mt Everest on May 18. He is the first-ever physically challenged Malaysian to achieve this feat.
Muhammad Hawari Bin Hashim: Overcoming disability and adversity
Hawari, who works at the Penang State Museum, has always dreamed of climbing the world’s highest peak. He wanted to show that having a disability does not have to be limiting. He also wanted to promote his home state of Penang and its culture.
He trained hard for two years, overcoming many challenges and obstacles along the way. He faced discrimination, financial difficulties, and health risks. He also had to communicate with his guide and team members using sign language and gestures.

Reaching the top of the world
Hawari was part of an expedition organized by Pioneer Adventure, a Nepali company that specializes in guiding climbers with disabilities. He was accompanied by Chatur Man (Chakra) Rai, an experienced Sherpa guide who learned sign language to communicate with him.
They reached the summit of Mt Everest at around 3:30 pm on May 18, after a grueling climb through the Khumbu Icefall, the Western Cwm, the Lhotse Face, and the South Col. Hawari waved the Penang flag proudly as he stood on top of the world.
