Woman sentenced to death for abusing 8-year-old girl

On Friday, a mother was sentenced to death for beating her fiancé’s daughter to death in HCMC last year, while the father was sentenced to eight years in jail.

The HCMC People’s Court sentenced Nguyen Vo Quynh Trang, 27, to death for murder, while his father, Nguyen Kim Trung Thai, 36, was sentenced to three years in prison for torture and five years for concealment of crimes, for a total of eight years in prison.

According to the judicial panel, it is against the law to beat people, especially minors. Trang took her rage out on Thai’s daughter since Thai’s family did not consent to Thai and Trang marrying and having children. Trang’s actions were thus particularly risky because they were against minors and for a “vile motive,” according to the report.

The trial of Trang and Thai received a lot of interest from the public. The HCMC Individuals’ Court set out 300 chairs for the public to watch the sessions, but with a significantly larger throng, including people traveling from outside the city, many had to stand.

Before the trial began early Friday morning, police sent extra officers to ensure security and restrict roads around the court. Trang and Thai have been living together for almost a year after Thai divorced his ex-wife in 2020. Trang had repeatedly struck the little girl and made her do chores since that day, according to the report. She moved to wooden instruments once the rods broke from frequent beatings.
