Unmasking the Sarawak Scam: A Deep Dive into Malaysia's Housing Fraud

An In-depth Look at the Sarawak Scam

Since 2019, a major housing and property investment scam has been operating in the Sarawak region of Malaysia, duping countless individuals into bogus deals. The scheme was run through a company that used Facebook as its primary advertising platform, offering victims the opportunity to have their own houses built. The victims were presented with three choices: building a house on their own land, finding land and building a house for the buyer, or investing in a property scheme with the promise of receiving dividends.

Two individuals associated with the scam were charged in a Miri court in March and their trials are scheduled for November. The Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, disclosed these details during a visit from the secretary-general of the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO), Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim, who represented 80 of the fraud victims.

The Victims and the Losses

According to Hishamuddin, nearly 400 people in Sarawak fell prey to the scheme, many of whom were rural residents. The victims suffered massive financial losses, with one reporting a loss of almost RM300,000 ($71,000) after being persuaded by the company’s representatives. The victims paid in cash or via fund transfers to the company’s bank account, only to realize they had been scammed when the company failed to deliver on their promises of building their houses.

Police Response and Advice to the Public

In response to the scam, the police have set up a dedicated task force to investigate the matter. Sarawak Police Commissioner, Mohd Azman, has advised the public to be cautious of housing-related or investment schemes on social media and to conduct thorough due diligence on any company or individual offering such schemes. He also strongly urged people to inform family members or friends if they receive such offers from unknown individuals or companies.

Conclusion: A Call for Vigilance and Awareness

As the investigation into the Sarawak scam continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and due diligence when engaging in property and investment deals, particularly those advertised on social media. The scam has not only resulted in significant financial losses for the victims but also sowed distrust among the public towards housing and investment schemes. While the authorities continue to work towards bringing the perpetrators to justice, it is also crucial for individuals to stay informed and cautious to prevent falling prey to such scams in the future.
