The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle approximately 24 tonnes of frozen pork worth RM180,000 into Malaysia. The illicit activity was discovered during an inspection of a container at Port Klang on Wednesday (May 24). According to the Selangor Maqis director, Mohd Sobri Md Hashim, the imported frozen pork failed to meet the necessary import permit regulations, as the importer had failed to disclose relevant labels on the packages and had violated the import permit requirements.
Legal Violations and Consequences
Mohd Sobri highlighted that the importer’s actions constituted an offense under Section 15(1) of the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011. This offense carries severe penalties, including a fine of up to RM100,000, a jail term of not more than six months, or both upon conviction. Maqis remains committed to upholding import regulations to ensure the safety and quality of imported agricultural products. By enforcing stringent standards and verifying the certification of the source, Maqis aims to safeguard against the introduction of diseased or substandard food into the country.

Protecting Public Health and Food Security
The interception of the smuggled frozen meat underscores the importance of robust inspection and enforcement measures to safeguard public health and maintain food security. By detecting and preventing the entry of illegal or uncertified food products, authorities can protect consumers from potential health risks associated with contaminated or compromised goods. Maqis plays a crucial role in upholding these standards, working tirelessly to safeguard the welfare of Malaysians and maintain the integrity of the nation’s food supply chain.

Continuous Vigilance and Collaboration
The successful interception of the smuggling attempt highlights the need for continuous vigilance and collaboration between enforcement agencies and stakeholders. In an era where illegal activities have become increasingly sophisticated, it is imperative for authorities to remain one step ahead of those involved in smuggling operations. Maqis will continue to work closely with relevant agencies, such as customs and border control, to strengthen surveillance and intelligence sharing, ultimately deterring and disrupting illicit trade activities.
