Investigation Launched by Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka into Alleged Assault and Arrest of Journalist

HRCSL Steps in to Investigate the Incident

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has taken a pivotal step in launching an investigation into the recent arrest and alleged assault of Tharindu Uduwaragedara, an Executive Committee Member of the Young Journalists’ Association. The Rapid Response Team of the HRCSL has already visited the Borella Police station, where Uduwaragedara was detained, to inquire about his condition post-arrest.

Investigation Tactics and Objective

As part of their investigation, the HRCSL aims to request reports from all involved parties alleged to have played a role in the incident. Additionally, the Commission will summon all individuals connected to the case for an inquiry. The primary objective of these actions is to accumulate as much information as possible to gain a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to, and during, the incident.

Arrest During Protest: A Matter of Concern

Tharindu Uduwaragedara was arrested during a protest in Borella, and was later released on bail. The investigation led by the HRCSL aims to ascertain whether Uduwaragedara’s human rights were violated during the incident. If found to be the case, the Commission seeks to hold the responsible parties accountable. This move underlines the HRCSL’s commitment to protecting the human rights of all individuals within Sri Lanka.

Allegations of Police Brutality

According to reports, Uduwaragedara was forcefully pulled out of a rickshaw while he was leaving the protest and coerced into a police vehicle. Despite identifying himself as a journalist repeatedly, he allegedly suffered physical assault from two officers en route to the Borella Police Station. He was reportedly detained without charge and denied access to medical treatment for a head injury he sustained during the incident. These allegations, if proven, could indicate a serious breach of human rights and professional conduct by the police.

Call for Accountability

In light of these events, there are increasing calls for authorities to release Uduwaragedara unconditionally and to launch an investigation into the allegations of police brutality. These voices stress the importance of journalists being able to cover protests without fear of reprisal, a fundamental component of press freedom. The alleged arrest and assault of Uduwaragedara have been described as appalling, prompting demands that the perpetrators be held accountable.

The Bigger Picture: Freedom of Expression under Threat?

Uduwaragedara’s case highlights the ongoing concerns about freedom of expression in Sri Lanka. The National Movement for Social Justice, amongst others, has emphasized the need for an immediate investigation into this alleged inhumane attack on the journalist. The incident, they argue, is a clear demonstration of disrespect towards the freedom of expression. Amid these concerns, the HRCSL’s investigation comes as a beacon of hope for those advocating for justice and upholding human rights.

Setting a Precedent

The investigation by the HRCSL into Uduwaragedara’s case is a significant step in ensuring that human rights violations, if proven, do not go unpunished. It serves as a warning to those who may threaten the freedom of expression and the rights of journalists. It underscores the importance of holding those in authority accountable for their actions, paving the way for a more transparent and just society.
