Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) recently uncovered a Russian spy who had been operating in Greece since 2018, using the identity of a Greek citizen named “Maria Tsalla.” The spy, believed to be Irina Alexandrova Smireva, had obtained Greek citizenship and an identity card, while running a handicraft store and working as a photographer in Athens.
Although the EYP did not officially disclose the spy’s nationality, it was later revealed that she was Russian and had left Greece in January. As an EU citizen, “Maria Tsalla” had the freedom to travel and work across multiple European countries, and her activities were not limited to Greece. The spy’s exposure was initiated when a foreign attempt to access the personal data of deceased Greek citizens was detected by authorities.
