Chinese nationals caught in a ring of smuggling in Vietnam

A ring trafficking Chinese into Vietnam and ultimately to other Southeast Asian countries has been crushed by border police in central Vietnam.

On Friday, authorities at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in the Vietnamese province of Quang Tri transferred 11 Chinese and 5 Vietnamese to the provincial police department for additional investigation.

Around 11 p.m., border guards apprehended Le Ngoc Quy, 27, a resident of Lao Bao Town in Quang Tri's Huong Hoa District, carrying four Chinese citizens, aged 20 to 28, into Laos. on Nov. 19.

They located Le Anh, a 50-year-old inhabitant of Huong Hoa, from Quy. Hoa has assisted Quy in bringing Chinese to Laos.

Border patrol officers continued their investigation and detained 39-year-old Tran Van Bac, a resident of northern Nam Dinh Province, the following day while he was transporting seven Chinese citizens to Quang Tri. All of the Chinese were headed to Laos after breaking into Vietnam illegally.

They detained Ho Thi Van, 48, a native of Huong Hoa District who had been identified as the ringleader of the smuggling operation, early on November 20.

According to Colonel Le Van Phuong, in charge of Quang Tri's border guards, the Chinese would first invade Laos before moving on to Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar.
