Peru was shaken by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, June 2, that hit the Maca region in the southern part of the country. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 7:22 PM local time (00:22 GMT on Sunday) and had a depth of 10 kilometers.

Location of Epicenter :

The epicenter was located 9 kilometers south-southeast of Maca, a town in the Caylloma province of the Arequipa region. Maca is known for its colonial church and its proximity to the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world and a popular tourist destination.

The quake was felt in several cities in southern Peru, including Arequipa, Puno and Cusco. However, no major damage or injuries were reported, according to local authorities and media.

The National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) said it was monitoring the situation and coordinating with regional and local governments to assess the impact of the quake. It also urged people to remain calm and follow the recommendations of the authorities.

Seismic Active Zone:

Peru is located in a seismically active zone, where the Nazca Plate subducts under the South American Plate. The country experiences frequent earthquakes, some of which have caused significant damage and casualties in the past.

In 2007, a 8.0-magnitude quake struck near the coast of central Peru, killing more than 500 people and injuring thousands more. In 2016, a 5.4-magnitude quake hit near Maca, damaging several buildings and injuring dozens of people.
