China calls for “ambitious and pragmatic” new global pact to preserve biodiversity

At a U.N. meeting that starts next week, China will lead talks to secure an “ambitious and pragmatic” new global biodiversity pact, but Chinese officials said implementing the agreement remains the biggest challenge.

On December 5, representatives from nearly 200 countries will gather in Montreal to establish a “post-2020 framework” to protect habitats and ecosystems and ensure the sustainable and equitable use of biological resources.

Zhou Guomei, head of the environment ministry’s international department, told reporters that the negotiations had not been “smooth sailing,” but were focused on an ambitious deal that was “also pragmatic, balanced, feasible, and achievable.”

The meeting, known as COP15, was originally scheduled to take place in Kunming, China’s southwestern city, but was moved this year due to strict zero-COVID curbs. China will continue to hold the presidency.
