The A12 motorway on the Utrechtsebaan in The Hague was closed to car traffic in both directions at the start of the afternoon. Protesters from the Extinction Rebellion action group have blocked the road.
Climate activists believe that subsidies for fossil fuels such as oil and gas should be discontinued immediately.
The number of activists is unknown, but eyewitnesses estimate that there are around a hundred. Despite the fact that the action had been announced, they were able to access the highway without difficulty.
Extinction Rebellion has blocked the highway in The Hague for the fourth time. The most recent time was in mid-October. 62 people were arrested after more than an hour. The municipality then declared the roadblock ‘life-threatening.’
Extinction Rebellion frequently protests on the Utrechtsebaan because it runs directly between the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate and the House of Representatives temporary location.
