Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his decision to boycott the eighth governing council meeting of Niti Aayog. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kejriwal expressed his protest against the “undemocratic and unconstitutional” ordinance that restored control over services in the national capital to the Centre. This move nullified a Supreme Court order that had given control of services, except for police, public order, and land, to the elected government.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, will not have any representative at the Niti Aayog meeting as the Centre turned down the state government’s request to send the state finance minister and chief secretary. The Centre insisted that Mamata Banerjee attend the event. However, Banerjee has already decided not to attend the governing council meeting of Niti Aayog, although the reason for her absence has not been specified.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his inability to attend the Niti Aayog meeting due to prior commitments. Senior members of the Bihar cabinet mentioned that they were awaiting a response from the Union government regarding a possible replacement. Similarly, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will also be absent from the meeting due to a scheduled meeting with Arvind Kejriwal in Hyderabad.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will not attend the meeting as he is on a visit to Singapore and Japan. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann decided to boycott the Niti Aayog meeting to protest alleged discrimination against the state by the Centre over the issue of grant of funds. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot cited health reasons for his absence. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan did not provide a specific reason for his non-attendance.
These absences highlight the varying concerns and issues faced by the Chief Ministers, resulting in their decision to boycott the Niti Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It remains to be seen how this development will impact the discussions and outcomes of the governing council meeting.
