Azadi Front Claims Responsibility for Taliban Prison Attack in Balkh
Overview
Azadi Front, an anti-Taliban militant group, has claimed responsibility for a daring attack on a Taliban prison in Balkh province. The assault took place in the early hours of Monday morning and resulted in the escape of over 200 prisoners, most of whom were affiliated with Azadi Front.
The Attack
According to eyewitnesses, a group of heavily armed militants stormed the prison, overwhelming the guards and detonating explosives to breach the outer walls. The attackers then engaged in a fierce gunfight with Taliban fighters inside the facility, providing cover for the prisoners to escape. The assault lasted for several hours before the militants successfully retreated.
Azadi Front’s Statement
In a statement released shortly after the attack, Azadi Front claimed responsibility and stated that the operation was carried out to “liberate our comrades who have been unjustly detained by the Taliban”. The group further warned the Taliban of more attacks if they did not release all prisoners affiliated with Azadi Front.
Government Response
The Afghan government has condemned the attack and labeled it as a terrorist act. In a press conference, the interior ministry spokesperson expressed their determination to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore security in the region.
Taliban’s Prison Facilities
The assault on the Taliban prison has raised questions about the security measures within their facilities. Critics argue that the fact that Azadi Front militants were able to infiltrate and carry out such an audacious attack shows weaknesses in the Taliban’s security apparatus.
