Amnesty International has urged Sri Lanka to remove charges against two protest leaders who have been imprisoned for more than three months following the island nation’s anti-government demonstrations earlier this year.
Amnesty International has also renewed its request for Sri Lanka to repeal the harsh, civil war-era Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), under which the two protest leaders are detained.
Both university student leaders Wasantha Mudalige and Galwewa Siridhamma were detained in August and have since spent more than 90 days in prison under the PTA.
Amnesty International’s regional researcher for South Asia, Tyagi Ruwanpathirana, urged the government to dismiss the “baseless terror allegations” against the two leaders and stop extending their detention.
