Historic Landmark in Peril
The former Ayr Station Hotel, a magnificent structure built in 1885 in a fusion of French chateau and Scottish baronial architectural styles, has been a subject of concern among heritage campaigners. Save Britain's Heritage has previously called for efforts to rescue this splendid landmark, which has unfortunately remained derelict for the past seven years. Its historical significance is further underscored by the fact that its success prompted the construction of another iconic hotel, the Turnberry Hotel (now Trump Turnberry), by the Glasgow and South Western Railway company in 1906.

Ongoing Efforts and Building Safety
The local council had served a dangerous building notice on the former Ayr Station Hotel in 2018, recognizing the need to address the deteriorating state of the structure. However, the estimated cost of restoration, standing at £9.95 million as of October 2019, has presented significant challenges in securing a viable plan for the building's future. As the fire rages on, authorities and preservation advocates face renewed urgency to protect this cultural gem and ensure its long-term survival.
