The incident occurred in the building of the city authority, located south of the capital Cairo. The injuries varied from suffocation to superficial burns.

Authorities attributed the cause of the fire to a short circuit in an air conditioner on the third floor, as indicated by a preliminary examination conducted by the Egyptian interior ministry. The fire quickly spread across multiple floors, causing significant damage to the building's facade.
