Five people died in a fire that broke out in Yoka zone Bukasa Parish, Makindye Division of Kampala City. The source of the fire is being looked into by police in Kabalagala.
The fire began at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire.
“It is suspected that the fire began with an abandoned candle from the makeshift house of Ogola Charles, who specializes in selecting plastics, and spread to the house of Luyomba Steven 50, killing everyone inside,” he stated in a statement.
The deceased was identified by Mr. Owoyesigyire as Luyomba, his wife Doreen Nafula, and their children Sumei Lubega, 16, Edith Naiga, 15, and Andrew, 7.
He stated that the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services were able to extinguish the flames and warned the public not to leave unattended fires since they are harmful to others in the event of an accident.
The Kabalagala fire occurred exactly one month after a fire destroyed the Salama School for the Blind in Luga Village, Ntanzi Parish, Mukono District, killing 11 children.
