The Ministry of Home Affairs said on Wednesday that 901 police officers have been given Police medals ahead of the 74th Republic Day celebrations.
140 people have been given the Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), 93 people have been given the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM), and 668 people have been given the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM).
Only 16 of the 140 people who have received the Police Medal for Gallantry have done so after they have died.
The Police Medal for Gallantry is given to people who do very brave things to save lives or property, stop crime, or catch criminals.
The President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service is given to police officers who have done a great job, and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service is given to officers who have done a good job and shown initiative and dedication to their jobs.
On Wednesday, the Home Ministry also said that people in the Fire Service, Home Guards, and Civil Defence will get President’s Medals for Republic Day 2023.
