The Rising Cost of Game Development: A Balancing Act for the Video Game Industry
Financial Sustainability and Rising Development Costs in the Gaming Industry

Financial Sustainability in the Gaming Industry under Scrutiny

During the recent Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2023, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the President of Capcom, brought to light a significant issue that has been concerning the video game industry. Tsujimoto expressed worry about the economic feasibility of the sector, given the increasing costs of game development. He highlighted that while the expenses associated with creating games continue to climb, the retail price of games remains fairly low, thereby posing a challenge to the industry’s financial sustainability.

A Common Sentiment Among Industry Representatives

While Tsujimoto’s views may stir up debates among stakeholders, they are not unfounded. His concerns echo those raised by other representatives within the industry, who have already started noting price escalations in hardware and services within the gaming sector. The gaming industry is currently grappling with the dilemma of how to balance the rising costs of game production without affecting the affordability of these games for the consumers.

Japanese Video Game Industry: Revival and Reconsideration

Besides his role at Capcom, Tsujimoto also chairs the Japanese Computer Entertainment Association (CESA), the organization that organizes the Tokyo Game Show. His opening speech at the event focused on the current state of the Japanese video game industry, which is experiencing both a revival and a re-evaluation of various principles. The industry is exploring ways to cope with the financial pressures of producing high-quality games without compromising the affordability and accessibility of these games to the public.

Addressing the Economic Challenge: A Potential Solution

In his speech, Tsujimoto proposed a potential solution to offset the ballooning costs of developing triple-A video games: increasing the retail prices of games. This suggestion is not yet a firm commitment, but rather a question raised by the president of Capcom. Tsujimoto is questioning whether games may be underpriced in relation to their value and the actual costs involved in their development and marketing.

The Takeaway: Balancing Costs and Value

The primary takeaway from Tsujimoto’s address at TGS 2023 is his concern for the economic sustainability of the video game industry in the face of rising game development costs. He suggests that one possible solution could be to increase the retail price of games. This proposition is based on the argument that the current pricing may not accurately reflect the value of the games and the associated costs of development and marketing. As the debate continues, the video game industry will have to find a balance between maintaining the quality of games, ensuring their affordability for consumers, and securing the financial sustainability of the industry.
