The Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) union members have overwhelmingly voted in favor of a strike against ten major video game developers. The strike vote, authorized by a colossal 98.32% of union members, provides the union negotiators the ability to call for a strike if they fail to secure a new Interactive Media Agreement contract.
The vote was the result of five rounds of negotiations that have been ongoing since October 2022. However, the union claims that the video game companies have shown a lack of willingness to engage in discussions concerning critical matters such as compensation eroded by inflation, unregulated use of AI, and safety.
The strike potentially targets ten companies that frequently employ actors’ services for their video games. The list includes Activision Productions Inc., Blindlight LLC, Disney Character Voices Inc., Electronic Arts Productions Inc., Formosa Interactive LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., Epic Games, Take 2 Productions Inc., VoiceWorks Productions Inc., and WB Games Inc.

The outcome of this strike could cause significant disruption in the video game industry, depending on how the targeted companies respond and the success of the union’s negotiation efforts. The strike authorization does not mean an immediate work stoppage, but it gives the union the power to call one if negotiations fail to produce an acceptable agreement.
Among the key issues are compensation, the use of AI, and safety measures. The union is pushing for a significant improvement in compensation for their performers to counteract the effects of inflation. They also seek to regulate the use of AI for performances in video games and implement greater safety measures for both on-camera and voice artists.

Despite the strike authorization, there is still hope for a resolution. The union and the video game companies are set to resume negotiations. While it is clear that the union members are prepared to strike if necessary, they still express hope that an agreement that meets the members’ needs can be reached.
This negotiation process represents a critical moment for the video game industry. The result of this process will determine whether the performers working in interactive media can continue to earn a professional living doing the job they love. It’s a crossroads where the sustainability of a career performing in video games is at stake, according to SAG-AFTRA executive vice president.
In a rapidly evolving industry like video games, where the use of advanced technologies such as AI is becoming commonplace, the rights and compensations of performers are critical issues. The outcome of these negotiations could set a precedent for how these matters are handled in the future. Whatever the result, it’s clear that this is a pivotal moment for the video game industry and the performers who bring these games to life.
