Salman Rushdie's first book after the New York knife attack

Six months after he was stabbed, British author Salman Rushdie released his new book, "Victory City," on Tuesday. It is a "epic tale" about a woman in the 14th century who goes against a patriarchal society to rule a city.

The novel claims to be a translation of a historical epic written in Sanskrit. It was written before an attack with a knife in the US nearly killed the Indian-born author.

The much-anticipated book tells the story of a young orphan girl named Pampa Kampana. She is given magical powers by a goddess and goes on to found the city of Bisnaga, which means "Victory City" in English.

Rushdie, who is 75 years old, won't be promoting his 15th book because of his health, but his agent Andrew Wylie said that Rushdie is "recovering."

On August 12, he was attacked right before he was going to speak at a conference in Chautauqua, which is in upstate New York near Lake Erie.

The author went into hiding for a long time after Iran's first supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, gave the order to kill him because he thought "The Satanic Verses" was blasphemous.

Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old man from New Jersey with roots in Lebanon, was arrested right after the stabbing. He later pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Rushdie, who has been a naturalised American for 20 years and has lived in New York, lost the use of one hand and the sight in one eye, Wylie said in October.
